If you are looking for a break away with your family – Barcelona is perfect. It has city, beach and loads to explore. It’s a bit of a favourite destination of mine – the kids always have a great time which means we can properly chill as well.
It’s a really family friendly city where children are welcomed and accepted and they are often out late as parents enjoy time out of the sun to have dinner and a drink or two.
Great places for families in Barcelona…
Hit the beach – the sea is lovely and the sandy beach, especially during the week, is relaxed with plenty of space. The facilities are good with toilets, showers, shops, bars and cafes and it is perfect for swimming,
paddling and playing.
Parc Guell – it gets very busy with tourists in the summer but it is beautiful and big and there is plenty of space to explore. It is full of stunning work by Gaudi, which needs to be enjoyed.
Sagrada Familia – another simply stunning Gaudi building and it is so worth the entrance fee.
Jardins del laberint d’horta – these beautiful gardens and maze are well worth a visit with children
Montjuic – you can walk to the top or there is a cable car to take you to the castle at the top of the hill, which provides a fantastic view over Barcelona.
It is brilliant for kids to explore and there are tanks to play on too.
Barcelona Zoo – it’s brilliant with a huge range of animals and makes a
great day out with children.
Parks and Picnics – this is a city with a lot of parks and squares to explore, play, relax and enjoy a picnic.
And let’s not forget all the ice cream…
Some practical information…
EasyJet flies regularly from Newcastle. From Barcelona airport you can jump in a taxi, or just get on the train into the city centre, which will then connect you to the metro system.
Accommodation – there is everything to suit every pocket and every need from expensive hotels to more affordable Airbnb apartments. We’ve always used Airbnb type accommodation because it gives us more space as a family, it is more affordable and we get to stay in brilliant locations – we have stayed right next to the beach or in the heart of the city centre with terraces and amazing view…
The Metro – Barcelona has an extensive metro train system which will connect you to all corners of the city. You can buy a travel card if you are planning on using the metro a lot or just buy single tickets as you need them. It is quick. clean and the carriages have air conditioning!
A good sling and a light foldaway buggy for babies and toddlers can
be a lifesaver.
And try to carry water and snacks with you all the time – especially if you have an older baby/toddler. It can be thirsty work, especially if you are visiting in the summer.
It is also a great city to simply wander the streets to explore and stumble across great cafes, bars, parks, markets and secret squares.
Visit Barcelona – for a great family holiday
