Anxiety can feature in many pregnancies – it can be fleeting or it can be overwhelming and it can occur in straight-forward as well as more complicated pregnancies. There might be no obvious reason for it.
Anxiety can be challenging, it can be crippling and it can feel really hard to manage. The key to it can be about managing it rather than battling with it or just hoping it goes away.
- Using your breathing as a distraction, as a way to work through any anxiety and to head off any panic can be really useful. It’s a really simple and effective way to have strategies to stay calm.
- Talking it through can also be helpful – so you can focus on where it might be coming from, what it can feel like and how you can better manage it.
If your anxiety is overwhelming and it is stopping you from living your life, you may need more support – talk it over with your GP and midwife as you could be referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Team or your community midwife may be able to offer you more support.
