The skill of conversation

Conversations are a crucial part of my work with parents, whether as part of research studies or with mums who have recently returned to work after having a baby.

After working with parents for almost 25 years, my niche and my passion is creating the space for conversations where I can prompt, listen, hear and reassure.

Conversations bring reality and can ease assumptions, they can be really simple but very powerful and they are the foundation of my work: not being the expert giving information, but asking questions with a therapeutic, personalised approach.

The skill with conversations is not dominating, or allowing anyone else to dominate, and when managing group dynamics, making sure everyone is involved in someway. It’s about creating a safe space – whether in-person or online – where people can share and speak freely.

And just letting the conversation happen might not be enough, gentle prompts, careful questions and facilitation can make them effective.

This is the therapeutic approach that I apply to my work with parents and I’ve really seen the difference it can make.

  • I am an antenatal & postnatal specialist, working with parents since 2002.
  • I work with organisations and parents everywhere.
