These questions have been developed to help you plan and prepare realistically for labour and birth. You can use these questions to think about what you might need during labour and birth.
1. Do you know what labour and birth involves?
2. What do you want your birth story to be?
3. Labour and birth could mean 400 contractions – how do you feel about working with and managing discomfort and pain?
4. What can you do to rest in labour?
5. How do you feel about using positions and movement and making the birth space work for you?
6. How do you feel about trusting your instincts?
7. Do you know what could impact your needs in labour and birth?
8. How can you manage any anxiety, overwhelm or frustration?
9. What might you need to help you to feel safe in labour?
10. What might you need from your birth partner?
11. How do you feel about the uncertainty of labour?
12. Do you have any worries or fears?
13. Do you know how to be at the centre of your care?
14. How do you feel about the possibility of being vulnerable in labour?
15. How can you work with your midwife and the maternity system?
As well as having my own children, I have worked with expectant parents for over 20 years and I attend births as a doula and this has given me an awareness of the considerations that can be useful as part of birth preparation.
Let me know if you have any questions and we can talk through your birth preparation so you are informed and better prepared.
