Cervix

This is a quick guide to the cervix. It is the opening to your womb and during labour it softens and dilates so your baby has the space to leave the womb to move down through your vagina.

The cervix produces mucus, which changes throughout a menstrual cycle: during ovulation this mucus adapts to help the sperm reach an egg. It can also alter position throughout the menstrual cycle, moving between posterior and anterior.

During labour, the cervix dilates in an oval shape, rather than the circle, which is often how dilation is seen.

The cervix is 3-4cm long and about 3cm in diameter, it is firm and it changes with age as well as after childbirth.
