A fundus is described as: “the part of a hollow organ (such as the uterus) that is furthest from the opening.”
The fundus of the uterus is the upper part of the uterus, and it is dome shaped.
The height of the fundus is measured in pregnancy to determine the growth of your baby, linked to how many weeks pregnant you are. Your midwife will measure the size of your bump – from your pubic bone to the top of your bump, which is the fundus – and if these match, this is an indication that your baby is growing as expected.
During labour, contractions start in the fundus – this is where they are strongest – and they move down the uterus to the cervix.
